Level School – 101

This introductory course (16 hours) for level provides maintenance personnel with a basic understanding of numerous level technologies. The basic portion focuses on concepts applicable to virtually any manufacturer’s equipment. Following this introduction, we will proceed with in-depth training on D/P Level systems, Displacer Level systems, Time of Flight (TDR-Radar), Free Space Radar, and other level technologies that would provide a general overview and understanding of process level transmitters. This class will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training working on the PTU® (Process Training Unit) a full-scale, working process skid with on-line instrumentation and controls designed to simulate real plant operating conditions.  At the conclusion of the course, attendees will be able to:

  • Recognize a broad variety of level technologies and understand the strengths and limitations of each
  • Work with various level instrumentation technologies for a variety of applications
  • Set up and commission level instruments from point level switches to radar gauges
  • Use on-board and pc based tools to verify the health of the instrument and its signals
  • Diagnose and correct problems with capacitance, ultrasonic, D/P and radar level systems

This course will specifically cover:

  • Differential Pressure Level Transmitters
  • TDR-Capacitance/Interface systems
  • Displacer Level systems
  • Guided Wave Radar (TDR)
  • Free Space Radar systems
  • TDR/Free Space mapping and configuration software
  • Conductivity Level Switches
  • Vibratory Level Switches
