Intermediate Instrumentation

This course on instrumentation (24 hours) provides a review of instrumentation technologies, terminology, and symbols needed to work in the field. Understanding P&IDs and basic wiring techniques will be covered, along with how instruments communicate. Students will be exposed to a variety of instrument disciplines including Flow, Pressure, and Temperature in the first two days. The third day will focus exclusively on Level measurement and Time-of-Flight (ToF) technologies. At the conclusion of the course, attendees will be able to:

  • Learn to read and understand P&IDs
  • Work with instrumentation specialists to specify the best type of instrument technology for a variety of applications
  • Set up and commission current instrument technologies including Flow, Level, Pressure, and Temperature
  • Diagnose and correct problems with instrumentation

This course will specifically cover:

  • Coriolis, vortex and electromagnetic flowmeters
  • Pressure and differential pressure transmitters
  • Time of Flight (ToF) level instruments including free space radar, guided wave radar and ultrasonic transmitters
  • Level switches
  • Temperature switches and transmitters
  • Envelope curve evaluation
  • ToF tooling and applications
