Eastern Controls’ Training
Early last year, Eastern Controls developed our very own training program dedicated to our customers to increase their knowledge and understanding of products, terminology, and tools necessary to work within the process controls industry.
What makes Eastern Controls’ training program unique is our PTU® (Process Training Unit). Our PTU® is a full scale, working process plant with on-line instrumentation and controls integrated with the PlantPAx process automation system from Rockwell Automation. Our PTU® has a “wow” factor that puts our words into action and clearly demonstrates the investments and capabilities of our training program.
Our PTU® goes well beyond classroom-only style training. Customers can expect a hands-on experience with the types of equipment, operation, diagnostics, and troubleshooting found in real life process plants. Various communication protocols are also fully operational, including EtherNet/IP™, HART®, PROFIBUS®, FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus, and WirelessHART. In addition to our variety of standard classes, customers have the unique ability to customize training programs to fit their specific wants/needs.
Throughout January, ECI offered various training courses covering fundamental instrumentation principles, as well as pressure & temperature, level, and flow courses.
The following courses will be available in February:
Instrumentation-103: February 13th – 15th, 2018
This course specifically covers:
- Coriolis, vortex, and electromagnetic flowmeters
- Pressure and differential pressure transmitters
- Time of Flight (ToF) level instruments including free space radar, guided wave, radar, and ultrasonic transmitters
- Level switches
- Temperature switches and transmitters
- Envelope curve evaluation
- ToF tooling and applications

Differential Pressure Costs You Money
Determining an accurate flow rate requires knowing the air velocity and multiplying it by a cross-sectional area to calculate the volumetric flow rate. The air flow restriction caused by an airfoil or Venturi creates a pressure drop, which results in a loss of total capacity and efficiency. To compensate for the pressure drop, motors, compressors, and fans must work harder to ensure that additional air is produced to keep the flow volume at the necessary flow rate. Simply replacing the flow restriction with a Kurz Instruments’ thermal sensor assembly can result in increased savings and more efficient performance.
Based on an existing system:
- 8000 Hours of Operation
- Area = 70 FT2
- Flow = 300K CFM
- Motor Efficiency = 95%
- Fan Mechanism Efficiency = 60%
- Energy Cost = $0.12/kWh
- ∆P = 4” WC
This system experiences a 65% blockage due to three airfoils mounted in a 7’ x 10’ duct.
By changing out your current airfoil or Venturi obstruction for a thermal mass insertion flow meter, the cost of energy savings allows quick recovery of your initial investment.
Removing the restriction and replacing it with a Kurz Thermal Sensor assembly will:
- Increase air availability while reducing energy dissipation
- Save money by reducing power consumption
- Improve efficiency by reducing fuel usage
- Reduce CO2 and NOx emissions due to lower fuel consumption
- Improve efficiency by increase air-to-fuel ratio
- Increase measurement accuracy, repeatability, and turndown, which improves combustion control
- Reduce maintenance time and expenses

Keep it Simple
By eliminating differential pressure (DP) as a method for measuring the flow stream, it becomes much easier and more cost-effective to design and maintain your combustion control system – saving potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
Kurz thermal mass insertion flow meters allow you to upgrade your in-line DP system and replace it with the pipe or duct configuration used throughout the rest of your combustion control system. Kurz insertion flow meters have effectively no impact on the flow stream, proven high accuracy, and are much more economical for both initial and maintenance costs.

ISPE 28th Annual Symposium
The International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE) will host their 28th Annual Symposium at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, February 1st from 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM.
The symposium includes technical demonstrations of the newest products and services on the market; various pharmaceutical companies along with equipment and service providers onsite looking for talented people to fulfill open career opportunities, and an evening networking party.
Stadium tours will also be offered, providing attendees a behind-the-scenes look at the Xfinity Press Box, Eagles Home Interview Room, Eagles Locker Room, and the Field.
