ECI News – February 2018

ECI Training Opportunities

As mentioned in last month’s issue, ECI’s Instrumentation 103 course took place February 13th – 15th. Attendees enjoyed three days of learning to read and understand P&IDs, working with instrumentation specialists to specify the best type of instrument technology for a variety of applications, and diagnosing/correcting problems with instrumentation.

If you couldn’t attend this course, don’t worry: ECI has plenty of training opportunities coming up during March!

Calibration Training

On March 6th, ECI will host a training seminar on Calibration. This 8-hour course on calibration will start by providing maintenance and engineering personnel with a basic understanding of numerous pressure and temperature technologies. This basic portion will focus on concepts applicable to virtually any manufacturer’s equipment, as well as skills needed to set up and maintain such equipment.

Introductions and lectures on the technologies will be followed with in-depth demonstrations and hands-on training exercises. This class will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training utilizing ECI’s PTU™ (Process Training Unit), which is a full-scale working process skid with on-line instrumentation and controls.

This course will specifically cover:

  • Pressure Transmitters
  • Differential Pressure Transmitters
  • Temperature Transmitters
  • RTD/Thermocouple sensors
  • Communication Tools and Methods

Coriolis Mass Flow Training

On March 14th, ECI will host a training seminar on Coriolis Mass Flow. This 8-hour course on Coriolis mass flow will start by providing maintenance and engineering professionals with a basic understanding of the Coriolis principle. This basic portion will focus on concepts applicable to virtually any manufacturer’s equipment.

Following this introduction, an in-depth training on density and concentration measurements will take place. The class will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training utilizing ECI’s PTU™.

This course will specifically cover:

  • Flow History
  • Theory of Operation
  • Basic Flow Theory
  • Accuracy
  • Troubleshooting and Repair
  • Installation
  • Configuration
  • Entrained Air
  • Density Measurements
  • Use of onboard and pc-based instruments to set up and verify health of interfaces and signals
  • Sizing

Control Valve 101 Training

On March 21st and 22nd, ECI will host a training seminar on control valves. This 16-hour course will expose students to a variety of control valve designs and applications. Attendees will recognize the various types of control valves utilized in today’s process control loops. After completing this course, the successful student will develop an understanding of control valve design and applications. Recognize the various types of control valves utilized in today’s process control loops. Attendees will experience hands-on learning in the classroom and PTU™ area.

This course will specifically cover:

  • Introduction to Control Valves
  • ASME Piping Specifications and Connections
  • Valve Body & Bonnet Material Selection vs. Design Conditions
  • Cv – Flow Coefficient
  • Fl – Pressure Recovery
  • ANSI Leakage Classification
  • Actuators and Accessories
  • Shut-off Capabilities
  • Process Control
  • Definition and understanding of various types of Control Valves (Globe, Ball, and Butterfly type)
  • How the Control Valves Function/Operate
  • Body Sub-Assemblies and Differing Actuation Techniques
  • Exposure to Accessories associated with Control Valves
  • Actuators, Positioners, and Digital Valve Controllers
White Paper: Flow and Level Instrument Verification

Automatic verification minimizes the need for expensive instrument calibrations. This whitepaper by Endress+Hauser uses their patented Heartbeat Technology to illustrate how modern instrumentation simplifies calibration and verification.

Continual internal diagnostics and in-situ verification capabilities reduce maintenance expenditures because calibrations on flow instruments are done only when needed and diagnostics built into the level devices along with the ability to verify periodically identify problems with instruments. It leads to a better overall equipment effectiveness as it results in less process downtime for maintenance and fewer unexpected shutdowns from instrument failures.

Heartbeat verification fulfills all requirements specified in ISO 9001:2008 section 7.6 and can be used interchangeably with traditional wet calibrations for traceable instrument checks. It continuously monitors the entire signal chain for deviations within a very tight band. The failure threshold is defined by the specified accuracy of the instrument; therefore, Heartbeat Diagnostics triggers an alarm as soon as the sensor or instrument is no longer operating within the original specification.

GlobalCon Conference

Join ECI at this year’s GlobalCon Conference on March 21 – 22, 2018 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA! Presented by the Association of Energy Engineers, GlobalCon is designed specifically to facilitate those seeking to expand their knowledge of fast-moving development in the energy field, explore promising new technologies, compare energy supply options, and learn about innovative and cost-conscious project implementation strategies.

A broad range of activities are offered both days including the multi-track conference, featuring presentations by leading industry experts; AEE-sponsored training seminars; an expo featuring the latest technologies and services the energy marketplace offers; and free interactive technology and applications workshops presented in the exhibit hall.
